Windshield Wiper
Mary Anderson, USA, patent 743,801 of 1903. The swinging blade every driver takes for granted.
Overview
Anderson, an Alabama developer, watched trolley drivers open windows in New York sleet and patented a spring-loaded rubber blade operated by a handle inside. Critics called it a distraction; automakers passed. Her 17-year patent expired just as production cars needed it, and she never profited. Cadillac adopted powered wipers by 1922. Trico later dominated with vacuum and electric designs. Her patent is the anthem of the unrewarded inventor.
