Overview
Damadian's 1971 tumor-detection finding and 1974 patent on scanning apparatus, field-focused by his Fonar company, launched magnetic resonance imaging alongside Lauterbur and Mansfield's gradient imaging methods, which won the 2003 Nobel without him, a famous omission fight he protested in full-page ads. MRI renders soft tissue in detail X-rays cannot, without ionizing dose. Fonar won antitrust damages against GE over scanner patents. Hospitals worldwide image 150 million scans yearly inside the bore his patent named.
