Overview
Motorola's Cooper made the first handheld cellular call in April 1973, phoning his rival at Bell Labs. Patent 3,906,166, radio telephone system, granted September 1975 with Cooper among inventors. Bell's cellular concept papers dated 1947, but handheld won the market. The 1983 DynaTAC, 3,995 dollars and 30 minutes of talk, began the pocket era. AMPS networks spread analog cells nationwide. Half of humanity now carries this patent's grandchildren.
